Privacy Policy

Who we are

PlateScan is operated by Ali Maclean Consulting - FZCO, a company registered in the United Arab Emirates ("we", "us"). We are the data controller for the personal data described here. Contact: support@platescan.ai.

Who can use PlateScan

PlateScan is for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13; the app refuses a date of birth under 13 and stores nothing about that person. If you believe a child has provided us data, email support@platescan.ai and we will delete it.

What we collect

Account: your name and email address from Sign in with Apple or Google, and an account ID. Profile: the height, weight, date of birth, gender, goal and activity level you enter. Food data: the meals you log, including nutrition estimates, and any photos, voice notes or text you use to log them. Purchases: your subscription status (no card details — Apple handles payment). Device: a random per-install identifier, app version and crash/diagnostic reports.

How we use it

To calculate your daily targets, analyse what you eat, show your progress, run your subscription, keep the app working and fix crashes. Your health-related data (weight, height, goals, meals) is used only to provide the service. It is never sold, never used for advertising, and never shared with data brokers.

Artificial intelligence

PlateScan uses OpenAI as its AI provider. When you use AI features, the meal or label photos you take, the voice notes you record, the food descriptions you type, and your plan inputs (age, height, weight, goal) are sent to OpenAI solely to produce your results. The app asks for your consent before the first time this happens. Under our agreement OpenAI does not use this data to train its models. PlateScan does not store your photos or audio after analysis; the nutrition results are saved to your account.

Who we share it with

Only the service providers needed to run the app, each bound by a data-processing agreement: Clerk (sign-in), Neon (database, United States), OpenAI (AI analysis, United States), RevenueCat and Apple (subscriptions), Sentry (crash reports, with personal data removed), Expo (app hosting and updates). Public food databases (USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts) receive only the product or food name you look up, never your identity. We also disclose data if the law requires it.

International transfers

Our providers store and process data mainly in the United States. Where you are in the UK or EU, transfers rely on the providers’ standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.

How long we keep it

Your profile and meals are kept while your account exists. When you delete your account (Settings → Delete account) we permanently delete your profile, meals and subscription record and delete your sign-in identity at Clerk; feedback messages are anonymised. Crash reports at Sentry expire after 90 days. Photos and audio are not retained after analysis.

Your rights

You can view and edit your details in Settings, export your data or ask what we hold by emailing support@platescan.ai, and delete everything in-app at any time. If you are in the UK or EU you also have the rights to restrict or object to processing, to portability, and to complain to your data-protection authority (the ICO in the UK). We acknowledge data-protection complaints within 30 days and respond without undue delay.

Security

Data travels encrypted (HTTPS), is stored in access-controlled databases, and every private request is verified against your signed-in session. No system is perfectly secure; if we learn of a breach affecting you we will tell you and the relevant authority as the law requires.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters we will show you in the app before the change takes effect. The date at the bottom tells you the current version.
